Having assumed the office of Mayor in January 2003 after serving as a Councilman for 25 years, I am excited about the future and the potential for providing quality services to our citizens.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Carencro is one of six municipalities in Lafayette Parish. The governing authority for the parish is the Lafayette Consolidated Government.

Carencro is governed by the mayor and city council. Council members are elected at large, with each member representing the interests of the city as a whole. Council members may be reached by calling city hall at 337-896-8481.

PLANNING DEPARTMENT

The Planning Department provides services for businesses and individuals involved in
a variety of activities, including:

- Permitting and inspections of commercial projects.
- Assist with management of Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program. Click here for more information on stormwater pollution.
- Plan reviews and platting of all subdivisions.
- Management of the Floodplain Management Program, with a full-time Certified Floodplain Manager on staff.
- Coordinating the Community Rating System for the National Flood Insurance Program.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

Carencro citizens are served by a chief of police, Carlos Stout, with a full-time force of officers, detectives and support staff. In addition, up to 10 Reserve volunteer officers contribute regularly to the department's policing efforts.

The department participates in a number of crime-prevention and community-building initiatives, including Project Safe Neighborhood, Safe & Sober, a youth activity program and an elderly services program. You can learn more about the department by visiting www.carencropd.com.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

A volunteer fire department has a roster of 25 volunteers and two full-time employees, including Oren Haydel III, the fire chief. The central fire station and a satellite station house four pumper trucks, a tanker/service truck, a fire/rescue vehicle, a utility truck and a grass truck, in addition to a rescue boat.

A Junior Firefighter program, and continual training and certification standards ensure the department is ready to continue fulfilling its mission of providing efficient and effective protection of life and property. For more information, visit the department's web site, www.carencrofd.org.

PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION

The seven volunteer citizens of the Parks and Recreation Commission (PARC) develop plans and a budget to implement an effective community recreation program. Among PARC's projects are Carencro Area Youth Sports Inc., exercise equipment for elderly residents of Beau Sejour, a summer program for youth recreation and operation of Pelican Park.

UTILITIES

The City of Carencro operates water, sewer and natural gas services, and contracts with BFI for waste disposal. In addition to the Carencro Gas Company, other local energy providers are Entergy, SLEMCO and Trans Louisiana Gas Company.
